We are excitedly preparing for our second Speak Up! Self-Advocate Training on October 6-7, 2015 in Washington, DC . This training is open to all, and targeted to persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, families, direct support professionals and LSA Disability Network members’ staff. The LSA Disability Network Policy and Advocacy Team have created this opportunity to:
- Grow the capacity of persons with disabilities to speak for themselves and others about the importance of Medicaid funded community services and supports.
- Build a network of self-advocates to speak with one voice at the federal and state levels.
- Strengthen member advocacy and training capacity by providing materials, sample curriculum and trainers to help with state efforts. Identify leadership development and advocacy models that work.
Attendees will go through comprehensive advocacy training on October 6th with experienced self-advocates, DC experts and Hill staff. Then on October 7th those skills will be put into action with Hill visits to their elected officials followed by a group debrief. We are putting together a curriculum that outlines what is advocacy and why it is important, telling our story, role playing lobby visits and key public policy issues. We will have powerful devotions each of the two days and a reception honoring a member of Congress who has been a champion for disability rights.
There is no cost to attend this training. Travel costs must be covered by the attendee or sponsoring organization. The training will be limited to 40 people. Registration will open later this summer. For more information contact Sarah Meek at firstname.lastname@example.org.
