Susan Newton: In Loving Memory

In Loving Memory of Susan Newton

Tributes from our Network

During her five years with Lutheran Services in America, Susan Newton championed important initiatives and inspired others with her optimism, compassion, and belief in what was possible. Her legacy lives on through the people, programs, and communities she helped strengthen, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

“In the rhythm of leading, where each day carries new challenges and unseen burdens, Susan was always a gentle reminder of my why. She had a rare gift for making people feel seen. With sincerity and grace, she affirmed my value as a leader, sought my perspective not out of obligation but out of respect, and continually reminded me that our work in community is never done alone.

“Every conversation with Susan—whether across a table or through a screen—left me more encouraged than when it began. She carried a quiet light that lifted others without ever asking for recognition herself.

“God blessed us with an angel whose presence made this work feel lighter and this journey feel less lonely. Her legacy will live on in every leader she encouraged, every life she touched, and every act of kindness she inspired.

“She will be deeply missed.

“Peace and blessings to her family.”

— Sharif Walker, President & CEO of Bethel New Life

“I wanted to express my condolences on the passing of Susan. I was saddened to hear of her passing. Losing a friend and colleague is such a difficult thing.  I admired her smile, enthusiasm, professionalism, intelligence, and warmth. I remember how she made me feel welcome in a room each time we gathered. My prayers are with you as you celebrate her beautiful life, and I pray you find peace and comfort in the days ahead.”
— Kris Erickson, CEO of Bethany Home
“Susan’s leadership had a meaningful impact on all of us at National Lutheran Communities & Services. She had a remarkable way of inspiring collaboration and possibility, and her vision helped strengthen the broader network we are all a part of. Her influence will continue to be felt in the work we carry forward, and we are deeply grateful for the example she set.”
— Cyndi Walters, President & CEO of National Lutheran Communities & Services
“I was so saddened to hear of Susan’s passing. Although we worked in different offices and in different states, Susan was the ultimate connector to LSA and other members around the country. Her kindness and passion for the work of all LSA members fueled partnerships and friendships and will be a lasting tribute to her legacy. She was kind, smart, and generous with her time and knowledge. And she was a forward thinker — offering space to create and reimagine new ways to serve our neighbors. We will miss her greatly!”
— Janet Arning, Executive Director of Empowerment Services at Inspiritus
“I recalled loving working with her. She was amazing at what she did. She really cared about her work and made sure as an intern that I understood and enjoyed the work I did as well.
“Susan was the only person who saw me more than just a college student interning at LSA. She took me out for brunch, showed me around Arlington, and listened to what I had to say as a 20-year-old.
“Please send my condolences to her husband and family. She was truly incredible and LSA lost one of their best workers. Thank you for sharing this with me. Susan will be deeply missed.”
